This book is the equivalent of an 80's teen movie, but with black people. Even in our fiction we have to be perfect. This gives people the freedom to try and not be afraid to fail, because everything has an audience.īlack America and, by extension, the rest of non-white non-cis America, does not seem to be given that freedom. There are amazing books and movies with complex plots that make you think and feel ALL of the things, and there are fluff pieces that make you groan with how bad they are, and there is everything in between and to each side. My thought is that these are both good things. The level of media coverage and insta-celebrity is mind boggling fake. Yes, there are some completely UNbelievable things in this book.The good girl / bad boy trope, she makes him want to be better, yada yada. Yes, there are a whole lot of cliches in this book.I would like to address some of the negative comments I read.
